Still going strong at the ripe old age into his youthful early 70s this mega
entertainer, like McCartney, can still carry a tune. Better and better his mellow
sounds get. Just check out recent you tube videos to see this guy’s still got it!
Not bad for the son of a traveling salesman.
Humble and sincere this music mainstay owes a lot to his youthful years
and upbringing in Texas and Oklahoma. Quality stints with school chum
Steve Miller helped paved the way to an illustrious recording career. Starting
out, however things weren’t that easy.
Leave it to the city by the bay to help foster what would become a meteoric
rise to pop heaven. In the heady 60s and 70s San Francisco welcomed all
with open arms. After joining a number of bands and getting signed to various
labels this guitar toting string master struck gold with a series of memorable
tunes. Classics like Lido Shuffle,
It’s Over, Lowdown, and What Can I Say continue to enchant audiences.
So good was this up and comer that he received a Grammy award. Not bad
for what would become one of all time great blue-eye soul singers.
Toe tapping music never sounded so good, that mellow sound continues
to soothe nerves and please millions.

COURT DISPUTE
Had the International Basketball Federation taken a firmer stand, the
Philippines could have won the gold medal at the 1936 Berlin Games,
where the sport made its Olympic debut. During the tournament,
the federation passed a rule that banned all players over 6 feet 3
inches. The United States, which would have lost three of its key
players, vehemently objected and the rule was promptly withdrawn.
The Americans went on to win the gold medal be sweeping its four
games. The Philippines, whose tallest player was 6 feet 1 inches was
Charles Borck , won four games and lost only once – to the U.S., 23-
56. But by some mysterious formula, the Philippines was relegated
to fifth place in the final standings behind Canada (3 wins – 1 loss),
Mexico (3-2) and Poland (1-2). Adding to the mystery is the fact that
the Philippines beat Mexico, 32-30, in the opening round.
Q. In what sport is it illegal to use the left hand as one’s playing
hand?
A. Polo.
For The Record. In the early days of boxing, whne a boxer was
getting throttled and wished to end the bout, he would take his towel
(sometimes a sponge) and toss it in the middle of the ring. Thus
originated the phrase “to throw in the towel.”
WORD WATCH

meaning, ‘inspired by a god.”
