RELIGIOUS 24 Wisdom from the Word Ben Berto “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the L ord is one![a] 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. Deuteronomy 6: 4-7, NKJV Not having been blessed by natural chil- dren, I must confess that I am almost clueless of what goes on with the rearing of children from birth to adult- hood. Oh yes, I have read and have taken care of ba- bies and children having had brothers and a sister to baby sit, wash, and feed to a point. It was sometimes fun to have them around and sometimes it is not when you have other things to do or want to go somewhere and you find them tail -gait- ing you every where. I guess that is how mothers feel when they are the only ones doing all the work and dad is away at work or out fish- ing. I’m glad, I had a part in making my mom’s work easier. We are only four children in the family. How much more if there are 12! PHILIPPINE ASIAN NEWS TODAY May 16 - 31, 2017 Fathers Abraham, Job and David This month is Fathers’ Month, so I am dedicating this little song to them that I heard years ago. This is how I felt for my father and I’m sure everyone feels the same too. “O MY PAPA, TO ME YOU ARE SO WONDER- FUL /O MY PAPA, TO ME YOU ARE SO GOOD. /NO ONE COULD BE SO GEN- TLE AND SO LOVABLE/ O MY PAPA, TO ME YOU ARE SO GOOD.” In this article, I am going to talk about three fathers and how they raised their children ABRAHAM Abraham had several children, Isaac from Sarah, Ishmael from Hagar and when Sarah died Abraham married Keturah and they had six children. Isaac was the child promised to Abra- ham by God, and inheritor of his estate. The rest were given gifts and sent far away. Ishmael was also blessed by God and had great posses- sions, but in Isaac’s line was given the promise of the Redeemer. In Genesis 18: 19, We read that Abraham really looked after the spiri- tual well-being. Everywhere he went, he always built an altar to God and all his household worshipped God. That is why God said,  And the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am JOB Job was a godly man. He was also a very rich man possessing lards hers of sheep, cattle, goats, camels and large house- hold. He had seven sons and three daughters. But Job was also being moni- tored by Satan who wants to hurt him badly because Job was a follower of God. The Bible says, “There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God and shunned evil.” Job 1: 1. Just like Abraham, Job also looked after the spiritual like of his family. Continuing with the story, the Bible said “And his sons would go and feast in their houses, each on his appointed day, and would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5 So it was, when the days of feasting had run their course, that Job would send and sanc- tify them, and he would rise early in the morning and of- fer burnt offerings accord- ing to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned and cursed[a] God in their hearts.” Thus Job did regu- larly.” Job did not delegate the spiritual responsibilities to his wife alone. He took an active part. No wonder Sa- tan hated him, and wanted to destroy the man. For the whole story, read the whole book of Job. KING DAVID David as was a man after God’s own heart. He composed psalms and songs and put his trust is God. He made terrible mis- takes also that had caused lots of problems for his fam- ily. His affair with Bathsheba the wife of Uriah, the Hittite, one of his valiant soldiers had far-reaching conse- quencies. He engineered Uriah’s death at the hands of the Ammonites. David repented of his sin, but he had to pay a lot. David had many children from differ- ent wives and he was not in control of their behaviors. He did not correct them, and did not punish his son Amnon when he raped his half sister, the sister of Ab- salom. Psalm 51 is King David’s confession.
