WELCOME
FROM THE DEAN
T
he School of Engineering is in an enviable position. We have a strong, dynamic research program
in the midst of one of the best comprehensive universities in the world — one that has made it a
priority to encourage interdisciplinary research that addresses intellectually challenging and socially
pressing issues. In virtually every instance, the contributions that engineers are uniquely trained to
make — by synthesizing knowledge in ways that lead to solutions — are absolutely critical.
By sharpening our focus on those things we do exceptionally well, the School of Engineering will
enhance its ability to play a leading role in these collaborative efforts, as our faculty joins forces with
other departments and schools at the University — and with institutions around the world — to push the
frontiers of knowledge forward and to make the world a better place.
This opportunity to increase the impact and relevance of our research program is also an opportunity
to heighten the power of the education we offer our students, both graduate and undergraduate. By
bringing these grand challenges into our classrooms as well as our laboratories, we are engaging young
people in the excitement of using their knowledge and skills to re-envision and reshape the world.
The financial support of our alumni and friends is critical to achieving these aspirations. In the
following pages, we highlight a diverse group of donors and their reasons for giving to the School.
Some have the means to provide large gifts, while others make more modest donations. Regardless
of gift size, these donors are united in their appreciation for the education they received and their
determination to give back. Every gift is important for our future.
In the months ahead, I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible, whether on Grounds or in
my travels around the country. For now, my message to you is simple: Thank You!
CRAIG BENSON
Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science
