6 Tips When Turning A Business Trip Into Vacation
Uncle Sam may be able to pick up some of the tabs by deducting part, or all of you travel plans. And it’ s perfectly ok, and probably why most conventions are held in hotspots like Austin, Nashville or Las Vegas. Below are some tips that you may want to discuss with your tax expert.
Per Diem: Each year the IRS publishes a table( publication 1542) that establishes a per diem value for a set deduction per day when traveling. The amount is for lodging, meals, and incidentals. For example, in Nashville, your per diem is $ 185 ad day. If you spend less than that amount, you can still take the entire per diem deduction. The perk? No receipts required.
From Here to There: If your trip, like a convention, is mostly for business then travel to and from is fully deductible. For international trips, 75 % of your time must be focused on business to write off your plane fare.
Taking on Some Days: It’ s ok to arrive early or stay a few days later, but you can’ t deduct those recreation expenses and be sure that the primary purpose of your trip is the business.
Save Money on Meals Without a Deal Site: Eat half off! Well, not really but your meals and the meals of your business associates are deductible up to 50 cents on the dollar.
Fodder For The Folder: Need internet? How about a pressed shirt? Phone calls to the office or clients? These all add up, and if they are business related, you can write them off. Just be sure and create a folder filled with all the information from your trip, emails confirming appointments, receipts, itineraries, agendas, programs, you get the idea.
Don’ t be a“ Billy Joe and Bobby Sue”: In other words, don’ t take the money and run. Your expenses need to be“ reasonably based on the facts and circumstances.” This is not the time to be checking in at the penthouse or renting a Lamborghini. Remember to check in with your tax expert to get the most up to date and accurate information regarding business expenses!
