T he Little Engine That Could chugged into Wichita The dog days of summer did not translate to many events in our Phal world , however a good bit of activity is planned for upcoming months . Please keep an eye out for Phal Digest postings by email as well as up-to-date Phal event information on our website . Each meeting planned by your hardworking regional directors is worthy of your attention and attendance if possible . This is the best way to increase your knowledge of Phalaenopsis : be the first to know of new trends as well as add to your collection of plants . If none are scheduled in your area , please contact your director and offer your assistance in putting on a regional meeting sometime in the future .
Region 9 and 10 – Midwest – Bil Nelson On July 28 , the first IPA regional meeting for the Iowa area was held in Urbandale with an eager group of fifteen in attendance . John Stubbings , a featured speaker for the Central Iowa Speakers Day , also spoke to this group on multi-floral Phalaenopsis . Robert Bannister of Iowa Orchids graciously donated blooming Phalaenopsis plants with proceeds of the sale donated to the IPA color fund . Robert and Bil are looking into what they can do toward the planning of future meetings and events in Iowa and other states in our region so if you are in this area , please contact them with suggestions and offer your assistance as well .
Region 13 – Piedmont - Linda Thorne Encore ! Encore ! Hoping for a repeat of the stellar performance last fall , a Region 13 IPA meeting is scheduled for a return engagement at the Hickory Furniture Mart on November 3rd , 2012 at 2220 US Highway 70 Southeast , Hickory , NC 28602 , phone number 828-326-1800 . Starring roles will be filled by Regional Director Linda Thorne of Seagrove Orchids , HP Norton of Orchidview , and Tom Wise of John ’ s Island Orchids . Topics of discussion and the day-long schedule will be announced on the IPA website at a later date . People from every state and international visitors from several countries visit Hickory Furniture Mart each year . Furnishings purchased at the Mart may be found in celebrity homes , apartments , condominiums , mansions and castles all around the world . The Mart has been highlighted in The New York Times , Newsday , The Los Angeles Times , Woman ’ s Day , and many other national publications . The Mart has also been showcased on the “ Oprah Winfrey Show ” and the Discovery Channel ’ s “ Interior Motives with Christopher Lowell . Hickory Furniture Mart is truly the ultimate furniture destination and the perfect venue for a day of Phalaenopsis fun . Please mark your calendar to join us !
Regions 17 & 18 : NY , Eastern Canada , New England Marilyn Shapiro and Carri Raven-Riemann Due to the Phalaenopsis journal publication deadline , you won ’ t be receiving your magazine until after our back-toback “ Focus on Phals ” events have taken place in September . We ’ re looking forward to including a more detailed report in the next issue of Phalaenopsis for the Region 18 event on September 8th , 2012 in cooperation with the New Hampshire Orchid Society and the Region 17 event on September 9th , 2012 in cooperation with the North Eastern New York Orchid Society . Again , enormous thanks go out to both societies for inviting us back this year to share their meeting days with them and to all their members who volunteer their time to help us make both events the best yet ! So stay tuned . We ’ re seriously hoping that this year there won ’ t be a Caribbean hurricane forcing Carlos to stay in Puerto Rico once again !
