Phalaenopsis on a Marina Bay Sands Hotel counter in Singapore
schedule of the classes we would judge , a rulebook , and a judging preview workbook . No plants were entered by class . We had to locate the plants and record the names and location in the Judging Preview Workbook . We weren ’ t told who else was on our team so each judge was to independently create the plant entry list for the classes they would judge . Saturday , at breakfast , we were organized into teams of ten judges . Each team judged the assigned classes ( we did the multifloral Phalaenopsis – less than 8 cm flowers ). Our team included a captain from Kenya , Mr . Lee of Join Orchids from Taiwan , and eight Americans . We awarded ribbons , trophies , and several medals to the plants in our classes . The quality of flowers was very good but not outstanding like we ’ ve seen in Japan and Taiwan . After lunch , our team broke up as we had completed our assignments . Later in the afternoon , all judges individually voted for Grand Champion Flower , Cycnodes Taiwan Gold ‘ Orchis ’, Grand Champion Specimen Plant and the Grand Champion Display . At the 19th WOC in Miami , only designated teams voted for those three champions . The champion and reserve champion displays were both outstanding as was the champion flower .

Grand entrance to 20th WOC Show and Sales in Singapore
20th WOC Show and Sales in Singapore The show was open to the public starting Saturday and was visited by about 300,000 people . There also were sales of supplies and orchids . The 20th WOC had an inspection station which prepared the required documents to export plants back to your home . The conference included lectures for many days , some sightseeing possibilities , and a banquet . The banquet was held in one of the domes of the Marina Bay Park being constructed next to the hotel . Featured in the park are 100 feet umbrella type trees made of metal and used to grow orchids and other plants . The trees and landscaping were not completed by November and only one dome was in use . All of this is well lighted in changing colors at night . By chance we sat next to IPA friends from Iowa at the banquet . The 20th WOC lectures covered many subjects . With other commitments , I was only able to attend a few . One session was on judging systems around the world . Each country has developed different ways to recognize outstanding orchids . The standards of excellence vary somewhat from country to country mostly depending on the overall quality for each type seen in that area .
