IPA Regional Reports
Barbara Noe
I
t probably seems strange – even a bit of overkill – featuring Tom Harper as our Regional Director of note
in this issue of the IPA Journal. He has twice been
President of IPA and has held many other positions
since the inception of the organization but none has he
worked harder or been more effective at than that of Regional Director of the Southeast Region of IPA. If others
followed his lead in regional work, we would probably be
an even more dynamic and influential orchid organization.
Through the years of his involvement with our organization, you’ve most likely read his bio so you already know
his background in education and orchids; you’ve seen him
excel as auctioneer during our auctions and if you are really lucky, you’ve heard him speak on Phalaenopsis – always in conclusion pumping IPA membership. His work
as Regional Director of SE Region 11 sets him apart since
he takes this job very seriously by hosting two interesting
meetings each year featuring good speakers, successful
auctions while spreading the word of IPA. He is very dependable in reporting to membership about these meetings in our Journal. In addition, he is always ready to travel
to other regions to speak about phalies supporting other
directors in their work.
Thank you Tom …
you are The Best …
you have set the bar
way high for the rest
of us!

Congratulations to Betty Smith-Lambert and Jim Pearce
for winning the Arnie Linsman Trophy at the Spokane Orchid Society and the South Central Orchid Society Shows
respectively for best Phalaenopsis. The winning plants were
selected by the judges after AOS judging was completed.
Betty Smith-Lambert’s plant was Phal. Surf Song which she
bought from Tom Harper at the 2011 IPA regional auction.
The Northwest Region’s annual meeting is going to be on
October 12th at Orchidaceae in Walla Walla. The speaker
will be Mark Srull who will present an article he wrote for
the Orchid Digest on Trends in Phalaenopsis Breeding. Two
other speakers will be part of the program: Jason Fischer of
Orchids Ltd. will talk about Phragmipedium kovachii and
general cultural information and Bill Zimmerman will
give a photo tour of his recent judging trip to Columbia.
Send an email to [email protected] for more details
on lodging and schedule. Please plan to join us.

Twenty five Phalie enthusiasts met at Lines Orchids in
Signal Mountain, Tennessee on Saturday, June 1, 2013 for
the IPA’s SE Regional summer meeting. On our program,
were two newcomers speaking about orchids and focusing
specifically on novelty Phalaenopsis breeding and orchid
nutrition.
We began our meeting after our morning hospitality at
Lines. Up first was Rick Lockwood of Leiper’s Fork, Tennessee. Rick is a long-time member of the Orchid Society
of Middle Tennessee in Nashville. Recently he wrote and
had published an article in the March 2013 AOS Orchids
Journal entitled “What do Orchids Eat?“ Rick has read and
done considerable research on the subject and applying his
findings to his own greenhouse. The new growth and vigor
of his plants is a testament to his conclusions. For specifics
on his presentation, check out the March 2012 issue of the
AOS Orchids Journal.
After lunch, our
next speaker was
Mike Mims of near
Asheville, North
Carolina.
Mike’s
topic was “Stop and
Smell the Phals:
The Art of Colorful
Backyard Breeding”.
Mike is considered
a backyard breeder
of novelty Phalaenopsis. His recent
