INSIDE THE IPA
omething very important happened on December 21 , 2012 that affected all the Phalaenopsis breeders and growers worldwide … and is something that was not written in the Mayan calendar , but it happened on that date . And , it was something that had been written by Eric Christenson and published in his book Phalaenopsis : A Monograph in 2001 . The previous known genera Doritis and Kingidium are now Phalaenopsis . Most notable is that Doritaenopsis , the intergeneric hybrid between Doritis and Phalaenopsis , is no longer accepted by the Royal Horticultural Society hybrid registration and they are now registered as Phalaenopsis . Doritaenopsis does not exist anymore and eventually all Doritaenopsis will be renamed Phalaenopsis . This will certainly make things easier for everyone as everything now is a single genus .
There are two important events that members of the IPA need to be aware of , and you can read more inside the magazine . The first is the IPA Spring Member ’ s Meeting . Historically , this meeting has been in conjunction with the American Orchid Society Spring meeting , and hosted by an affiliated orchid society in the US or Canada . However , this year , this did not happen . So , the IPA is having its Spring Members ’ Meeting in Philadelphia on April 13th in conjunction with the South Eastern Pennsylvania Orchid Society Show at the Academy of Natural Sciences at Drexel University . So , for the members in the Mid Atlantic , Northeast and Washington areas , this will be a meeting that they can attend . But , every member of the IPA should plan to attend . The second event is our Symposium . This year the symposium will be at the Hilton Garden Inn in Austin , Texas on August 9th through the 11th . Save the date ! Information regarding speakers , vendors , and other events held in conjunction with the symposium including the registration form will be posted later on our website and in the next Journal . So , mark the date and plan to attend .
Finally , if you have not noticed , Volume 22 of the Journal had only two issues in it ( they were labeled as Vol . 22 ( 1 & 2 ) and 22 ( 3 & 4 ). The reason for this was to line up the volumes with the calendar year , instead of the IPA fiscal year . This way it makes it easier to track as all four issues will be published in the same year .
