( syn . Phalaenopsis violacea var . bellina Rchb . f ., Phalaenopsis violacea var . ochracea Rchb . f ., Phalaenopsis violacea ‘ Borneo ’ Hort .) which originates from Borneo
( Fig . 17 ). The taxon we ’ re dealing with here is a pendent epiphyte with succulent , waxy , shiny leaves , measuring up to 20-25 x 7-12 cm . Inflorescences are branching with age and produce flowers sequentially over long periods , bearing one to two flowers per branch simultaneously . Flowers are fleshy and waxy and very nicely scented . The main color is magenta pink , with more or less greenish apical tips . The three-lobed lip has a dark purple or magenta midlobe , contrasting with yellow lateral lobes . Two noticeable varieties are described : P . violacea f . alba ( Teijsm . & Binn .) Christenson is white with variable amount of green and yellow hints ( Fig . 18 ), and P . violacea var . coerulea Christenson , is lavender purple to indigo , depending on individuals ( Figs . 19 & 20 ). Such a “ blue ” form also exists for P . bellina but has not been yet formally described . These blue variants are not frequent , and crosses between two blue flowers do not assure blue flowered progeny . For a long time , P . violacea covered two types of plants : mainly pink flowers were known as “ Malaysia ” type while green flowers with a magenta center were known as the “ Borneo ” type . The latter is now elevated to specific rank as Phalaenopsis bellina Christenson . Chemical analysis of aromatic compounds of both species , and general flower morphology tend to confirm that the two species are clearly different although some taxonomists continue to treat them as variation in one species ( Dalström 2007 ). Nonetheless , it ’ s sometimes difficult to discriminate between the two species and the hybrid P . Samera ( P . violacea x P . bellina ) adds to confusion .
