Celebrating
Lawrence G. Kozlowski, Cultural Commissioner
As the summer fades and the days grow shorter, we begin
the last days of harvest from our backyard gardens, and
we celebrate October as Polish-American Heritage Month.
During this month, Polish-American communities honor
their Polish heritage with exhibits, parades, fairs, festivals
and dances recognizing Polish contributions to America.
This special month of celebrations was organized by Michael
Blichasz, President of the Polish-American Cultural Center
in Philadelphia, Pa. It was originally celebrated in the
month of August, but now to allow school children to learn,
experience and celebrate, it was moved to the month of
October. It was the month of October the first Polish settlers
colonized in Jamestown.
Polish heritage for each of our communities, churches,
families and ourselves has its own special meaning. Our
families' histories, customs, traditions, foods and religion
are all part of our history in America. Childhood memories,
which become adolescent memories, and all too soon
become senior memories, are part of our life and heritage.
