ROSALINE Just inside the nursing home , there ’ s an acorn and a pot . Would you help an old lady out and fetch those ?

( BEEF exits stage left .)
ROSALINE That young man … I ’ ve only just met him , but it ’ s like he ’ s … a seedling in need of fertilizer , waiting to grow .
( BEEF enters stage left with an acorn and a small pot with dirt in it .)
Set the pot down here , Sweetie .
( ROSALINE gestures to somewhere in the community garden . BEEF sets the pot down at the location indicated by ROSALINE .)
Now put the acorn in it .
( BEEF sticks the acorn in the pot vertically .)
Oh , no , no . You have to put the acorn sideways .
( Rudely ) What ? Then how does it grow ?
BEEF
( BEEF takes out the acorn and sets it on the soil sideways , as ROSALINE begins talking .)
ROSALINE The roots come out from the point of the acorn and grow downwards . Then , this tiny little acorn will grow up into a big oak , and drop more acorns to continue the cycle of life .
( Unimpressed ) An oak tree ?
