TO STEP into Goo Goo Cluster’s flagship
location in downtown Nashville is to step
back in time to an era of red diner booths and
chalkboard signage. However, behind the Goo
Goo Shop and Dessert Bar’s retro charm is
a thoroughly modern corporate culture that
achieves accountability and efficiency through
empathy and openness.
But it wasn’t always this way. Two years ago,
unexpected corporate changes brought Beth
Sachan, Vice President of Sales and Marketing,
and Laurie Spradley, Director of Operations
and Brand Development, to the helm of the
company. With that shift, they took on additional
responsibilities well beyond what their titles
reflect.
Feeling “unorganized” and “distracted” by
their numerous responsibilities—the women
manage every aspect of the candy company’s
retail and wholesale operations—they sought
the counsel of an executive advisory board.
The board immediately saw the great potential
of the company, but members also identified
