HOW TO PROPERLY POSITION YOUR COMPANY TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS BY THE END OF 2023
BY JASON RUSH , CERTIFIED PETRA COACH
AS WE come to the end of Q2 and the year nearly half over , now is a great time to check in on your progress toward achieving your annual goals . Proper goal setting ( and tracking ) is the secret ingredient to a successful business ; however , many companies don ’ t utilize goal setting enough within their business strategy — or at least not in a productive way .
Once you set a goal , it ’ s crucial that you stay focused on the outcome and delegate specific action items that will get you and your team to where you want to go . By systematizing your priorities , you can properly position your company to achieve success by the end of 2023 !
SET SMART GOALS
Before you can work towards a goal , you must set a SMART one — Specific , Measurable , Attainable , Relevant , and Time Bound . Let ’ s break down this model a bit further :
SPECIFIC : Specificity in creating and communicating a goal can be the difference in success or failure before you even start .
• Ask yourself things like : What does success look like in the very last moment of my time limit ? What will I have , i . e ., the result of my work ? If I state it this way , is it clear enough that everyone will know exactly what success is with this goal ? Avoid words like more , launch , create , increase , and finalize . You get the picture .
MEASURABLE : Making a goal measurable allows you to track changes , monitor progress , and adjust your actions to stay on track toward your goal . As we always say , “ If you can ’ t measure it , you can ’ t manage it .”
• Ask yourself things like : What is the size of the order ? What is the quality of the goal ? How much money will be spent towards the goal ? How many sales calls must be made per week to achieve the goal ?
ATTAINABLE : Attainable can be a relative term based on who is using it . Factually , just about anything is attainable with enough resources to achieve it . You ’ ll want to set goals that are achievable and press you beyond the current limitations ; it ’ s how you ’ ll get creative .
• Ask yourself things like : How can the goal be reached ? What resources would I need to get this done ? How can it be reached in a timely manner ? What are the steps I ’ ll need to follow to get to the goal ?
RELEVANT : Before working towards a goal , ensure it aligns with your company ’ s objectives , goals , plans , and values . Think about why it ’ s important and what it will help your company achieve .
• Ask yourself things like : Is the goal important ? How will it help us move forward ? Does the goal align with our goals and mission ?
TIME BOUND : A goal without a deadline is a missed opportunity for success . Setting a goal that ’ s time bound enables you to better schedule your workload so you can deliver on , or before , your deadline .
• Ask yourself things like : How can the goal be achieved in the specified time period ? By what date should the goal be accomplished ? How can I break this down into a week-by-week plan to ensure the work is completed on time ?
PIVOT YOUR PRIORITIES
Suppose you ’ re looking at an annual goal and realize you ’ re no longer on track to achieve this goal by the end of 2023 . In this case , it ’ s time to review what ’ s happening or not happening that is causing this so you can create a focal point for the second half of the year .
