adoption & rescue
When Rafiqi was rescued, he was in a heartbreaking condition. The frail pony was little more than skin and bones, having endured relentless hardship while being forced to carry heavy loads in extreme heat. Weak, exhausted, and struggling to remain on his feet, he bore not only the weight of his labour, but also the physical and emotional scars of utter neglect.
One of the more serious injuries was a large, severely infected wound on the side of his face that required urgent veterinary attention. Broken in body and spirit, Rafiqi had lost the will to fight.
Upon his arrival at the animal hospital at the Animal Welfare Society of SA, a dedicated team of veterinarians and caregivers immediately began his rehabilitation. A comprehensive medical assessment was followed by intensive treatment, including medication, daily wound care, pain management and a carefully balanced nutritional plan. Just as important was the compassion he received: patience, gentle handling, and the reassurance that he was finally safe.
The transformation was nothing short of remarkable. As the days passed, Rafiqi’ s wounds healed, his strength gradually returned and the fear in his eyes gave way to trust. The oncefrightened pony revealed a gentle, affectionate personality that quickly won the hearts of everyone involved in his care.
Today, Rafiqi has begun a wonderful new chapter. He has been placed in a loving forever home where he will never again experience neglect or suffering. Instead, he will enjoy the care, freedom and kindness every animal deserves, surrounded by people committed to his lifelong wellbeing.
His rescue also serves as a powerful reminder that animal cruelty cannot be ignored. Authorities have addressed the case and the matter remains part of an official investigation. Protecting at-risk animals and stopping future cruelty starts with holding abusers accountable for their actions.
Rafiqi’ s story is one of resilience, compassion and hope. It demonstrates what is possible when dedicated professionals, generous supporters and caring communities work together to give neglected animals a second chance.
Every rescue begins with someone willing to act. Every recovery is made possible through compassion and support. For Rafiqi, that support transformed unimaginable suffering – into a future filled with safety, dignity, and love, a future every animal deserves.
Broken in body and spirit, Rafiqi had lost the will to fight.
