training & behaviour
Choose a properly sized exercise wheel
These little critters can run several kilometres each night, making exercise wheels essential. The wheel should be solid and large enough for the hamster to run with a straight back rather than an arched spine; incorrect wheel sizes may contribute to spinal issues over time. Wheels with wire rungs or exposed mesh can also cause painful foot injuries, such as bumblefoot. Syrian hamsters require wheels of at least 27cm, while dwarf hamsters generally need wheels between 25 – 27cm, depending on the individual hamster.
Provide deep bedding for burrowing
Burrowing is one of the most natural and important hamster behaviours. Deep bedding allows hamsters to create tunnels, sleeping chambers, and food stores, helping them feel secure and mentally stimulated. Shallow bedding may prevent these natural behaviours and contribute to stress or boredom. Ideally, at least one-third of the habitat should contain bedding 25 – 30cm deep or more.
Offer fresh foods and clean water daily
Fresh foods and appropriate protein sources provide important dietary variety and enrichment. Fresh, clean water should always be available, and food should be offered daily to support good health and wellbeing.
Use safe, paper-based bedding
Many bedding products marketed for hamsters are unsuitable or unsafe. Dusty bedding and pine or other wood shavings can contribute to respiratory irritation and other health issues. Safe, paper-based bedding is the best option for creating a comfortable burrowing environment. If you’ re a hamster parent or thinking of becoming one, always research products carefully before use.
Add enrichment substrates
These animals benefit from a variety of textures and digging opportunities within their enclosure. Enrichment substrates encourage exploration, digging, foraging, and mental stimulation. Simple additions such as coco peat, safe play sand, and other hamster-safe substrates can greatly improve their overall welfare and activity levels.
Provide a safe sand or litter area
Many hamsters naturally choose one area of their enclosure to urinate in. A designated sand or litter area can support this behaviour and help keep the habitat cleaner. Only hamster-safe, unscented products should be used, while silica sands and heavily scented products should always be avoided.
Feed a high-quality, speciesappropriate diet
A balanced diet is essential for longterm health. Good-quality hamster food mixes should contain a wide variety of seeds and ingredients suited specifically to the hamster species. Cheap or heavily pelleted mixes are often nutritionally unbalanced and may lead to selective feeding or poor nutrition over time.
Be patient and gentle with handling
Because they’ re prey animals, hamsters may take time to build confidence around people. Patience and understanding are essential when handling them. Parents should supervise younger children during handling and enclosure cleaning. Although hamsters are often seen as simple“ starter pets,” they require very specific care and enrichment. However, provide them with the correct environment and they can become active, curious, and entertaining companions with loads of personality.
