Thrown off a bridge into the St Lucia Estuary
A witness watched a man hold a brown dog by a blue and white rope, kick it, and throw it off a bridge into the St Lucia Estuary in KwaZulu-Natal. A heavy weight had been tied around the dog’ s neck. The witness called the Special Projects Unit, and an Inspector left immediately to assist.
By the time the Inspector arrived, a boat operator had already spotted the dog in the water and pulled it to safety. The dog was later named Siyabonga.
After an extensive investigation, the Inspector traced the suspect to a house in Mtubatuba, where he admitted the act. He was arrested and now faces charges for this deliberate act of cruelty.
Siyabonga received the veterinary care he needed, was sterilised and vaccinated, and is now recovering well.

Rescued after being spotted in a viral video
The video was posted to showcase a social media influencer. Viewers noticed the dog in the background instead. She was severely thin, and calls to the Special Projects Unit came in quickly.
The public had already named her Bobby by the time Inspectors tracked down an address and got to her. What they found was an animal in distress: malnourished, covered in ticks and fleas, and suffering from flystrike. She had resorted to eating plastic out of hunger.
Before
Bobby was taken immediately to Nigel SPCA for a meal and veterinary care, then transferred to Boksburg SPCA, where an on-site veterinarian could monitor her recovery. She gained weight steadily, became a favourite among staff, and was adopted into a loving home. She continues to thrive.
Bobby’ s previous owner appeared in court twice on charges of contravening the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.
