The standards used by the organisation are based on those set by the IRO( International Rescue Dog Organisation) in Europe, aligning with INSARAG( International Search and Rescue Advisory Group) procedures and FEMA( Federal Emergency Management Agency) in the United States.
However, the training and assessments don’ t end there. Every two years, dog-andhandler teams are retested to ensure they maintain peak operational performance. Additionally, K9-SARA benefits from international collaborations, including engagement with experts and instructors from around the world.
K9-SARA’ s dogs include both air-scenting dogs, who detect any human scent carried on the wind and work off-lead, and scent-specific trailing dogs, who follow a known individual’ s trail while being on-lead. Together, they form an indispensable part of missing-person searches in wilderness and disaster environments.

The organisation works in close collaboration with multiple emergency and response agencies, including government bodies such as the South African Police Service, National and Western Cape Disaster
Management, Emergency Medical Services, and WSAR( Wilderness Search and Rescue), which is made up of a number of specialised volunteer organisations.
