The hidden cost of pet ownership

Pets give unconditional love, but the price tag isn’ t always cute. From rising vet bills to hidden costs, here’ s why financial planning is the real backbone of responsible pet ownership.
Owning a pet is one of life’ s greatest joys. They bring love, companionship, and even mental health benefits. But pets aren’ t free – they come with significant financial responsibilities that every future owner should consider before making the commitment.
Rising costs of veterinary care
Access to veterinary care is the most important factor in keeping pets healthy. Yet costs have risen sharply in recent years, especially for emergency treatment, specialist procedures, advanced diagnostics, and chronic medication.
“ Rising medical costs, imported medication prices and advances in veterinary care have all contributed to higher expenses,” explains Carina De Villiers, Pet General Manager at OnePlan Pet Insurance. Many of the sophisticated treatments once reserved for human medicine are now available for pets, improving quality of care but also driving veterinary inflation.“ Beyond medical bills, owners face increasing costs for food, grooming, and preventative treatments,” she adds.
Unexpected pet expenses
First-time owners often underestimate hidden costs. According to Carina, these include:
• Emergency treatment for accidents or sudden illness
• Chronic conditions requiring ongoing care, like arthritis or diabetes
• Dental procedures such as cleaning or extractions
• Preventative healthcare, including vaccinations, sterilisation, and parasite control
• Specialised diets with prescription or premium food
• Lifestyle costs like grooming, boarding, and training
• Senior pet care with more frequent vet visits and supplements
Carina explains that one of the biggest mistakes is underestimating the lifetime cost of a pet. It’ s not just an adoption fee – proper care requires ongoing investment.“ Other pitfalls include delaying insurance until health issues arise, skipping preventative care, failing to save for emergencies, choosing breeds without understanding hereditary risks, and waiting too long to seek treatment.”
The role of pet insurance
In the past, owners often faced heartbreaking choices when treatment was unaffordable. Today, pet insurance offers financial protection.“ The real value often becomes clear during accidents, surgery, or chronic illness treatment, where veterinary costs can escalate quickly,” says Carina.
When selecting a policy, owners should review waiting periods, exclusions, annual limits, excess fees, and whether coverage includes chronic care, routine care, or emergencies only. It’ s important to note that pet insurance isn’ t the same as medical aid – policies vary widely, so it’ s important to identify nonnegotiables and balance them against budget.
While insurance won’ t reduce everyday costs, it can prevent the devastating choice between financial strain and a pet’ s health, offering peace of mind when it matters most.
“ As more consumers are becoming aware that pet ownership is a long-term financial commitment, financial planning for pets is becoming an increasingly important part of responsible pet ownership,” says Carina.
