Why pets are more sensitive
Animals have:
• Far more sensitive respiratory systems
• A stronger sense of smell
• Smaller body mass
• Different liver detoxification pathways
Cats, in particular, lack certain liver enzymes needed to metabolise many essential oil compounds. Birds are even more delicate, with highly efficient respiratory systems that make them extremely vulnerable to airborne particles.
This means concentration, ventilation and oil selection matter enormously.
Essential oils safe for dogs
( when properly diluted and diffused in well-ventilated areas)
• Lavender
• Frankincense
• Chamomile( Roman)
• Cedarwood( Himalayan or Atlas – not all types)
• Ginger( very mild only)
Even with these oils:
• Never apply undiluted to skin.
• Avoid prolonged diffusion.
• Always allow the dog to leave the room.
• Monitor for coughing, lethargy, drooling or agitation.
Be careful with small breeds and dogs with breathing difficulties.
Essential oils unsafe for dogs
• Tea Tree( Melaleuca)
• Eucalyptus
• Peppermint( strong concentrations)
• Cinnamon
• Clove
• Oregano
• Wintergreen
• Thyme
These oils can cause respiratory irritation, neurological symptoms, or toxicity if ingested or overexposed.
Essential oils safe for cats:
Cats are significantly more sensitive than dogs. Oils to avoid around cats include:
• Tea tree
• Eucalyptus
• Citrus oils( lemon, orange, bergamot)
• Peppermint
• Pine
• Cinnamon
• Clove
• Ylang-ylang
Even oils considered“ gentle” should only be used sparingly and in well‐ventilated spaces, and should never be applied directly to a cat’ s fur or skin.
Birds: avoid diffusion
Birds have extremely delicate respiratory systems.
Essential oil diffusers, incense, smoke cleansing, and strong airborne scents are not recommended in homes with birds. Even small amounts can cause severe respiratory distress.
If you share your home with birds, it is safest to avoid essential oil diffusion entirely.
Safe guidelines for owners
If you choose to use essential oils in a home with pets, follow these guidelines:
• Diffuse for short periods only( 10 – 20 minutes).
• Ensure doors and windows are open.
• Allow animals to leave the space freely.
• Use high-quality pure oils – no synthetic fragrance blends.
• Never use ultrasonic diffusers continuously.
• Never apply oils directly onto pets unless under veterinary guidance.
If your pet shows any of the symptoms below:
• Drooling
• Vomiting
• Tremors
• Lethargy
• Coughing
• Difficulty breathing...
... stop using the oil immediately and consult a veterinarian.
A responsible approach
As pet owners, our responsibility is to create environments that support both our wellbeing and theirs. Essential oils can be used thoughtfully and respectfully, but animal safety must always come first.
When in doubt, consult your veterinarian. www. petpals. co. za 27
