ANIMAL CARE
TRUST TO RUN
PET FIRST AID
EVENTS THIS
AUTUMN
The Royal Veterinary College’s nurses and
clinicians will be running the event and
answering attendee’s questions
The Royal Veterinary College’s (RVC)
registered charity, The Animal Care Trust (ACT)
is opening the doors of the College’s small
animal hospitals to members of the public
interested in learning about pet first aid.
Pet owners who want to master the basics
of how to help their animals in an emergency
can attend first aid training days on 22
September at the RVC’s Hawkshead campus
in Potters Bar, or on 17 November at the RVC’s
Camden campus.
The sessions will be informative and
interactive and cover all sorts of emergency
situations. Attendees will also have the
chance to quiz the RVC’s team of nurses and
clinicians on any aspects of animal care in
critical situations.
Karen Humm, RVC senior lecturer in
Emergency and Critical Care said: “We would
recommend contacting your local veterinary
practice as your first port of call when your
pet falls ill, but these first-aid training events
will help you to act decisively and ensure
that your pet has the best chance of recovery
while you wait for professional help. My team
and I are really looking forward to helping
train more and more pet owners to be
prepared should the worst happen.”
Nadja Hale, head of fundraising for
the ACT, added: “This fantastic event is an
opportunity for dedicated pet owners to
help their pets the best they can, whilst also
supporting their local charity.”

An independent pet product manufacturer
has been announced as a finalist in the
PetQuip Awards for ‘Pet Product of the Year’.
Rob Peacock’s PetWeighter bowl, features
a base which can be filled with water or
sand, to give it a weight of up to 13kg,
meaning pets aren’t able to move the bowl
around or knock it over to spill their food or
water.
The PetQuip Awards has announced its 39
finalists for this year’s ceremony, which is in
its sixth year and will take place in autumn at
the PATS Telford trade show.
PetQuip’s trade association manager, Pat
Flynn said: “It has been a mammoth task
working with our team of experts to filter
through the entries and each and every
finalist can be proud of their achievements.
“This
is particularly
true for those
companies that have made it
into the final line-up in categories where
there were a large number of entries. Our
final judging panel, made up of independent
retailers, a retail chain buyer and a
marketing analyst, will have a hard time
deciding the ultimate winners.”
Peacock added: “I am absolutely thrilled
to be a finalist in the awards. Bringing a
product to market that we truly believe in
and getting recognition from professionals
in the pet industry is brilliant. We have had
such amazing feedback from customers so
far and this really is the icing on the cake.”
NOAH WELCOMES NO-DEAL
BREXIT PLAN PUBLICATION
The body said it remains ‘very concerned’ about the lack of sufficient time to execute a smooth
EU exit process without interruption to the availability of vital veterinary medicines
Trade body for the animal medicine industry
NOAH says it welcomes the publication of
the government’s no-deal Brexit plan.
Noah however says it remains ‘very
concerned’ about the lack of sufficient
time to execute a smooth EU exit process
without interruption to the availability of vital
veterinary medicines.
Gaynor Hillier, chair of NOAH, said:
“The production and supply of veterinary
medicines is totally dependent on complex
international supply chains that must
continue to function effectively after Brexit,
their unique status being recognised in the
recent government white paper.
“Raw materials will need to arrive
at manufacturing sites and veterinary
medicines will need to be transported across
borders to meet market requirements. Any
border delays, additional complex processes
or increased costs will risk medicines
availability for UK vets, farmers and all our
animals”
According to a recent NOAH member
survey, less than 15 percent of companies
say they are prepared for a hard Brexit with
the vast majority of respondents saying they
are not fully prepared should there be a
reversion to WTO rules on 30 March 2019.
Almost 60 percent of companies said
they are prepared for a transition period
to December 2020. Noah says even then,
the proposed transition period will not be
enough in some cases, “to make informed
business decisions”.
