service at the Royal Veterinary College
T
he Royal Veterinary College’s Ophthalmology Service
was re-established in 2012 and has grown rapidly
ever since. The service is formed of three board-
certified ophthalmology specialists, Drs Charlotte
Dawson, Roser Tetas Pont and Ursula Dietrich. The
team is completed by qualified veterinarians who are veterinary
specialists-in-training, Sarah Koll and Andra Enache.
The team treats dogs, cats and other small animal eye conditions at
RVC Small Animal Referrals. The team also offers an ophthalmology
service to the Equine Referral Hospital of the College. We have been
involved with exotic animals and most recently Roser Tetas Pont
performed cataract surgery on a lemur!
We are a very busy service and we deal with a large number of
eye conditions amongst many different species. One of the most
common eye conditions that we see are corneal ulcers. The cornea is
the anterior most part of the eye (i.e. the windscreen of the eye). It is,
in normal conditions, transparent and allows to see through. Corneal
