T
he relationship between
human and dog is a special
one and yet, there is an
enormous spectrum of
the form that relationship
takes. From feral dogs living on the margins
of human habitation, to working dogs viewed
predominantly as tools, to dogs who spend
their days in luxury as adored companions,
the domestic dog is increasingly, intimately
associated with us. As a result, science is
starting to take much more interest in the dog
and its fundamental biology. Thousands
of years of evolution and selective breeding
has produced a species that we work with,
share our homes with and increasingly view
as a member of our family. Combined with
this, is the fact that we know more about
the behaviour, training, welfare, health and
nutritional needs of the domestic dog than
