It dates to 1869 when a man named Russell Conwell heard it from an Arab guide in the Middle East who told him about a farmer , who heard tales of other farmers who had made millions discovering diamond mines . The farmer was so excited that he could hardly wait to sell his farm and go prospecting for diamonds himself . As it turns out , the new owner of his farm ended up finding one of the largest diamonds — worth millions — right there on the land the original farmer had sold him . The moral of the story : you don ’ t need to look elsewhere for opportunity , as you are likely already standing on acres of diamonds .
