Since it costs around $2.50 per tonne to dump it off Africa’s coast, compared to $250
per tonne in Europe, the abuse of Africa’s least developed by the world’s most developed
nations is a story familiar to all Africans, but it is the piracy that draws the most attention, not least because it makes for a good Hollywood blockbuster in a way a baby with
life threatening birth defects does not.
With the continued growth of Somalia over the last 3 years, levels of piracy have
dropped dramatically, and the growth in the economy and food markets seem to be
directly linked.
Anthony Karen is a photojournalist based in New York. Over the years, Anthony has
worked on several long-term projects, including extensive documentation of the Ku Klux
Klan, with several books and exhibitions produced internationally. Anthony served in
the US Marine Corps and has traveled extensively, volunteering on numerous international medical missions. His charitable affiliations include Hospice, Smile Train, Surgical
Volunteers International and the Humane Society.
