Perspective: Africa - September 2016 Above: A prisoner accused of murder at the Central prison of Mogadishu, Hodan District, Somalia. Mogadishu Central Prison Common in many prisons globally, the growing number of prisoners in Mogadishu’s Central Prison comes with decreased sanitary conditions, outbreaks of diseases like dysentery and cholera, made worse by the hot climate of Somalia. Visits in 2013 by the cabinet ministers responsible for the prison have resulted in concrete action taken to increase services to the prisoners, including clean water, medical treatment, and workshops that will increase skill levels to prepare prisoners for employment on release. 19
