GLOSSARY

Algorithm: A set of rules, or instructions, that a computer is supposed to follow when performing tasks. An example would be telling the computer to use the average formula: (n1 + n2+ n3.../ # of numbers), whenever the user wants to find the average of their numbers.

Key (coding): A key is the information that tells someone how to create or decipher a code. It was important for Alan Turing to use his machine to guess which key was used in the Enigma codes, since he wanted to decipher them.

Cipher: Another way of saying a code, or coded message.

D-Day: During World War II, on the 6th of June in 1944, the Allied forces (such as France, United Kingdom, United States) landed on a beach in Normandy, France. This became vital to the war because the new soldiers on Continental Europe help fight the Nazis. Also, this became the largest sea operation in history.

Noise Pollution: Noise that can be distracting, or even harmful, to the environment (like planes flying overhead).

Syntax: The arrangement of punctuation, spacing, phrases, and commands when writing codes. Without syntax, it would be difficult for programmers to read code. Imagine writing an essay without any paragraphs or punctuation- that is what code would be without syntax.

Super Computer: A computer that has the capabilities of computing and processing extremely fast compared to normal computers.
