LATERALTHINKING “You cannot dig a hole in a different place by digging the same hole deeper”1 A lateral thinker will realise that it is sometimes worthwhile to change the route rather than keep trying in the same direction. It is a process that seeks to change existing conditions, perceptions, concepts and boundaries.2 Lateral thinking refers to a system whereby previous logical thought is over-ridden by unconventional approaches. Dr Edward de Bono first coined the term in 1967 in a book called ‘New Think.’3 Dr. de Bono identifies two types of thinking methods. Vertical thinking refers to the traditional thought process of logic and sequence. Contrastingly, lateral thinking involves disrupting this sequence of logical thought and considering new perspectives (see figure 1). Beyond the technical definition, lateral thinking can be thought of illustratively.4 In order to render the success of this type of thinking Dr Edward de Bono has come up with a variety of user friendly techniques to enhance creativity and innovation. This is a vital element in empowering people to think laterally as it provides guidelines to what Bono describes is a skill that can be learned rather than a talent. One of these techniques is the Six Thinking Hat System (see figure 2). The inclusion of creative thinking into ordinary thinking is illustrated in this system. This metaphorical approach is defined by different coloured hats that inspire parallel thinking depending on which hat you are “wearing,” each being indicative of a different train of thought.5 Figure 1: Lateral Thinking versus Vertical Thinking. This type of thinking is fundamental in providing methods for groups to think outside of the box. The practical application of this process is simple if followed in this manner and a useful technique that I believe can be used in the work force as well as in everyday situations. THOUGHT + Figure 2: Edward de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats. APPLICATION The Six Hat System is such a creative way of applying lateral thinking to various situations. It can assist decision-making and the brainstorming of ideas in a fun and interactive way for groups to communicate and present their thoughts in various environments. As a design student this type of thinking is vital in creating unique and exciting projects and I definitely look forward to trying this technique one day to enhance creativity and initiative in the work force.
