Ferrum Phosphoricum is one of the Homeopathic medications that should be part of every travel kit as well as kept at home because of the many different and important symptoms it covers. It is used for the upper respiratory infection with gradually increasing fever, ear pain with congestion of the ear drum, runny nose with or without streaks of blood, laryngitis and bronchitis.

Sambucus Nigra (Black Elderberry) is used in Homeopathy to treat the following symptoms: runny nose with sensation of blocked air passages, hoarseness, laryngitis and cough. Black Elderberry is used in alternative medicine in high concentrations to increase immunity, and combat hay fever, flu, and sinus pain.

It is easy to indulge in rich food and overeat during trips and vacations. We feel comfortable to let go and experience foods we might not consume on a regular basis. This can create a sensation of fullness in the upper half of the abdomen, above the navel with the sensation of food not being

digested, bloating and belching. Carbo Vegetabilis (Charcoal) is the Homeopahic medicine for the above symptoms. In medicine charcoal is used to treat poisoning, prevent hangovers, reduce intestinal gas, treat abdominal pain caused by indigestion, and potentially to reduce blood cholesterol concentration.

Food poisoning, depending on the infectious organism, can cause a combination of symptoms: nausea, abdominal cramping, loose stools or diarrhea, body aches, fevers and chills, and dehydration. It can happen even when taking precautions like eating and drinking safe foods and beverages. Podophyllum Peltatum can help with these symptoms. It is imperative that one seeks professional medical advice with any episode of food poisoning whether while traveling or at home.

Finally, there is everyone’s favorite travel health related question: Which Homeopathic medication do we use in case of a hangover? Nux Vomica treats the symptoms of having nausea, indigestion, abdominal cramps, constipation, and the sensation of a hangover by feeling unsteady, drowsiness and dizziness, irritability and headaches.

The information in this article is for informational purposes and not to substitute a physician’s diagnosis and treatment. Although most medication mentioned can be purchased over the counter, it is imperative to consult a Homeopathic physician to prescribe the correct dosage and frequency for each specific medication.

Do not use Homeopathic medication if your symptoms are severe and seek immediate medical advice if symptoms last long or do not resolve. If you experience any of the issues mentioned above while on your trip, consult your physician upon your arrival. I see a lot of patients who acquired an illness on their trip, like food poisoning, who now have chronic issues because they did not diagnose or treat the illness properly. I encourage all my patients to do a stool culture, for detection of parasites, if they experience the symptoms of food poisoning.

Have a safe trip!
