HERING AND HIS SNAKE!

Constantine Hering, the father of American Homeopathy, was born on January 1, 1800 in Germany in a religious family. At age eleven he was sent to the Classical School of Zittau. At the age of seventeen he was sent to the Surgical Academy of Dresden to study surgery for the following three years. He was named by the other students “wisent” due to his stamina to study. He was always fascinated by the natural sciences and his true scientific journey started when one day he came across an old copy of a book, Euclid, and the introduction captured his attention: “Should a man desire to become a scientist, he must first become a thinker, and to become a thinker he must become a logician, and to become a logician, he must become a mathematician.” He then started learning Mathematics and Latin.

He attended University of Leipzig and studied seven courses of medicine. He was a pupil of Dr. Robbi, a surgeon in the French army and an antagonist of Homeopathy. Dr. Robbi was requested by a publisher to write a pamphlet on heresy of Homeopathy. The pamphlet was to be Homeopathy’s death blow. Dr. Robbi referred the publisher to his assistant and young friend Hering due to his busy schedule.

Hering willingly started this task by studying the writings of Hahnemann and examining the Materia Medica. He came across Hahnemann’s challenge: “Disprove, ere you condemn!” Hering repeated the provings and undertook other practical experiments and was intrigued that Hahnemann was right about the basic law of Homeopthy: “Like cures Like” but he was still not sure if these basic theories hold ground.

Quote: “I was dependent upon the school for support. I went to the place where my weekly expenditure was paid and asked for the allowance that was due me. I received the money, but was told that I should have no more unless I gave up dabbling in Homeopathy. I resented this insult by throwing the money which the chief of the institution had just paid me, at his feet, at the same time exclaiming: I shall never touch another penny of this money. From that moment I never suffered. As long as I live I will work for Homeopathy with all my power.”
