© Carolina A Castro: Dead Vaquita
The Vaquita
is the smallest and perhaps the most endangered cetacean on the planet.
The estimate is that there are less than sixty of them left in the only place they reside, in the northern end of the Gulf of California in a place the Mexican government has designated as the Vaquita Refuge.
Protecting the Vaquita has been difficult due to the elusive nature of these very shy marine mammals. They live in murky waters and are rarely seen except when caught in the nets of poachers who of course refrain from reporting the victims.
