Over the years, she shared the journey on her popular travel blog with a goal to inspire socially conscious travel and wanderlust in others. She was named National Geographic Traveler of the Year in 2013 for her work connecting travelers with social enterprises and grassroots initiatives all over the world through her website Grassroots Volunteering.org, and her book, The Volunteer Traveler’s Handbook.
