Though both have drawn inspiration
by Islamic calligraphy, an art form that has
been around for centuries, as well as by
various cultural and heritage elements of
Bahrain, Ebrahim and Elisabeth believe that
it is important to ensure you understand
the history yet not let it confine you as
artists. “Everybody interprets it and deals
with it in their own way”, says Elisabeth
about how historical elements can be used
as inspiration for artists, but adds that it
is important to have a firm understanding
and knowledge of history to work towards
a better future. “This is where art, I think,
is extremely important, via historical
understanding to figure out where we are
going”, she says. Ebrahim says he feels if
artists are too attached to their history they
might not be able to evolve and produce
works that are creative and innovative.
“We can use heritage, but in a more
contemporary way”, he concludes.
Amazed by the overwhelming response
to their exhibit, both Ebrahim and
Elisabeth give praise to Sheikha Hala for
not only understanding them as artists and
understanding the nature of their works,
but by giving them the platform to present
together and create the beautiful exhibit
which opened to a great reception. Due to
its great success the exhibition had been
extended until April 20, and was a part of
the Spring of Culture host of events and
exhibits across the Kingdom.
