but in understated manner that still allows
the place with a feeling of comfort as they
walk in. The glass facade one side of the
restaurant, and alfresco dining area as well
allows the diners to feel as though they are
having an outdoorsy dining experience,
while still being within the vicinity. A swing
hangs along one of the walls to, while
a spiral metal staircase takes the diners
upstairs to a more urbane space as the
striking neon purple “Drama in Manama”
sign lights up the place. Perhaps one of
the most photographed signs in Bahrain,
the installation is a piece by one of the
partners and artist, Ahmed Taleb, and
is part of the aesthetic Maryam says she
hopes to promote about the place: a place
where local talent can showcase their work.
From food, to poetry, art, music, and other
various forms of creativity that people wish
to display, Maryam says she encourages the
artists and creatives to use her space. Also
hosting a myriad of successful events like
open mic-nights, and tv-show screenings,
she says the idea is to blend in with the
artistic nature that the area has, she says.
Food, art, comfort - the true definition
of a social space, 55 Old St has established
its own identity within Block 338 as
definitely more than just a restaurant, but a
captivating space that allows and inspires
the visitors to be just as creative and
different as the place itself.
