To Our Community,
When you looked at the front cover of our annual report, you
may have noticed the students in the pictures flexing their
muscles. The students were asked to strike this pose as a way to
represent the “power” they have within themselves to learn.
Their show of strength on the front is one that we believe is
symbolic of our district on a number of levels. Perkiomen Valley
School District has consistently demonstrated its strength and
power when it comes to student academic performance. The
pages that follow will show you how well our students are doing
when it comes to meeting (and in our case, exceeding) state
benchmarks.
The Perkiomen Valley School Board went through a
number of changes during the 2017-18 school year
following the November 2017 election. Seen here are
the members of the Board at the conclusion of the
school year. From left to right in the back row are Jus-
tine Myers, Beth Negro, Dr. Wayde Weston, Dr. Gene
Halus, and Matthew Dorr. From left to right in the front
row are Dr. Reena Kolar, Judy Lofton (President), Sarah
Evans-Brockett (Vice President), and Beth Roberts.

Our Mission*
The mission of the Perkiomen Valley School
District is to provide a rich academic and
cultural learning environment that maximizes
available resources to assure that all students
grow intellectually, socially, and emotionally,
attaining the skills necessary to become
successful citizens.
* Mission as of the 2017-18 school year (prior to adoption of
new comprehensive plan)
But certainly we know our students are more than test scores,
and we are encouraged that the state has come to realize this
as well, with the development of a new accountability system
called the Future Ready PA Index (you can read more about this
on page 6). The new index is meant to offer a more “holistic” ap-
proach to measuring school performance that extends beyond
standardized test scores.
We appreciate the state’s efforts to measure schools in a more
holistic manner because we have long held the belief that we
are responsible for promoting not just academic growth, but
also social and emotional growth. This is another one of our
district’s many strengths. We offer a variety of opportunities and
resources to help children develop socially and emotionally that
you will learn more about as you flip through the pages of this
report.
While it is nice to celebrate our strengths, we certainly also eval-
uate areas where we need to develop. We are taking a closer
look at how we can help our academically proficient and ad-
vanced students to grow even more. We are examining ways to
make our courses rigorous and to promote “productive strug-
gle.” We are working to empower our students (and ourselves)
so that we can continue to evolve as a school district.
As we admire our strengths, I must also recognize that one of
our biggest strengths is the support of our community. We are
fortunate to have parents, community members and others who
value public education and are quick to offer advice, resources
or make other contributions that benefit our students, faculty
and staff. Thank you for all you do to empower us in our work.
Sincerely,
Barbara A. Russell, Ed.D.
Superintendent
