What is the PSSA? And Other FAQs
Q. What is the PSSA? A. The PSSA, or Pennsylvania System of State Assessment, is a standards-based, criterion-referenced assessment intended to measure a student’ s knowledge of the Pennsylvania academic standards in English / language arts( formerly reading and writing), mathematics, and science. PV uses PSSA scores, along with academic growth data and other assessments, to measure student achievement and to determine what adjustments might need to be made to instructional practices so that students continue to achieve at high levels. The charts on pages 5 and 6 show how PV’ s PSSA scores compare to the state average and the average scores from surrounding districts.
Q. Is the district’ s state funding affected by PSSA scores? A. No. About 10 years ago, the state rewarded districts that improved their scores with additional funding, but that does not happen anymore. In addition, schools are not penalized with less state funding if scores decrease.
Q. Are teacher evaluations tied to PSSA scores? A. Yes. Fifteen percent of a teacher’ s evaluation is based on building level School Performance Profile scores, and another 15 percent is based on teacher specific data such as their students’ performance on assessments. Twenty percent of the evaluation is based on elective data( such as district-designed measures and exams), and the remaining 50 percent is based on observation / practice.
