W
hat do Tin Tin, Jean-Claude Van Damme and The
Smurfs have in common? Well, they’re all Belgian
characters, as iconic as the beer of this Europe-
an country. Its popularity has made it well known all over the
world, even in Panama.
T’ Bier Klooster is a place where the traditional Belgian ale
is the main drink. This small brewery is located in José D de
Obaldía Street. Here, you can live the Belgian experience by
watching Tintin and its dog Milou in a wall, while the Smurfs
are leaning out in another corner.
In this beer cloister, as its name says in Flemish, offers exclu-
sive imported Belgian ale: more than fifty types of bottled beer
and ten special draft beers.
“We want Panamanians to learn about Belgium culture and
that European tourists know us when they come to Casco. Be-
sides offering a great variety of beers so as to delight our diners,
we also have mussels and chips in our menu. In Belgium, that’s
a traditional meal that is often accompanied by some ale.” af-
firms David Master, founder of T’ Bier Klooster.
Mussels and chips, or moules et frites, can be ordered in the
classic way with white wine, onions and chives; or the Panama-
nian style, with paprika or lemongrass. In the menu you can
also find the famous “meatball”, marinated with spices, served
with caramelized onions, and cooked in pepperoni sauce.
So, if you want to marinate your meal with the perfect beer
we suggest listening to Master or the waiters’ advices, who are
always serving their customers individually.
Master has visited Bruxelles two times in order to live the
Belgian experience and revive it in Casco. He eats and drinks
like a local since he arrives until he leaves. He says that in
Belgium there are around 5000 beers and more than 200 types.
There are dark beers, pale ales, Belgian quadruples, and the
famous Belgian trippel. “There’s an old brewery culture behind
all this: how to drink it, how to pour it, and present it.” Master
says.
In T’ Bier Klooster you will find a little piece of Belgium in
Panama. Thanks to the effort and dedication of its owner, it’s
now possible to feel like you’re in Bruxelles, drinking from a
mug and tasting the delicious mussels and chips. “Both locals
and foreign clients have enjoyed the place, they really appreci-
ate what we’re doing”, Davis affirms.
T’ Bier Klooster opens from Tuesday to Saturday, from 4
p.m. until 12 p. m. and Sundays from 12 am to 8 pm. For more
