Quinientos años de
alemanes en Panamá

de Alemania llegó a ser el nuevo
César, el emperador del Sacro Im-
perio Romano Germánico y con-
quistador de América, cuando aún
no se sabía bien qué era ese territo-
rio. Nacido en Gante (hoy Bélgica)
y educado en los Países Bajos, el 8
de septiembre de 1517 partió con
su escuadra desde Flesinga (Países
Bajos), rumbo a Santander, sin te-
ner idea de español y con toda una
corte flamenca acompañándolo.
Una tormenta los desvió y llegaron
el 19 de septiembre de 1517 los
cuarenta barcos de la escuadra a de
Villaviciosa, en Asturias. Fue pre-
monitorio: reunió en su persona la
grandeza de los césares y los vicios
de los césares.
Él programó la conquista de
América hace 500 años, en octubre
de 1517, el aniversario menos co-
nocido de la historia.
Y con él llegaron los belgas, los
alemanes, los holandeses, los aus-
triacos y, sí, también un puñado de
españoles.
Hay quien no lo cree, como si los alemanes hubieran
sido la última oleada de turistas exóticos que
descubrieron este destino, pero ellos fueron parte
fundamental de la gran conquista de América.

they were a fundamental part of the great conquest of the Americas.

harles I of Spain and V of Germa-
ny—the son of Philip the Hand-
some and Joanna the Mad—managed to
become the new Caesar, the emperor of
the Holy Roman Germanic Empire and
conqueror of the Americas when that ter-
ritory was still very much unknown. He
was born in Ghent (now Belgium) and
received an education in the Netherlands.
On 8 September 1517, he set sail with his
fleet from Vlissingen (the Netherlands)
headed for Santander, without having
any knowledge of the Spanish language
and with an entire Flemish court to ac-
company him. A storm drove them away
from their route, and on 19 September
1517 the fleet’s forty ships arrived in Vil-
laviciosa, Asturias. It was foreboding: in
him there was the greatness of Caesars
combined with their vices.
He planned the conquest of the Amer-
icas 500 years ago, in October 1517, the
least known anniversary in history.
And with him arrived the Belgians,
the Germans, the Dutch, the Austrians,
and yes, also a few Spaniards.
