IF THESE STONES COULD SPEAK
Cantor Sandy Horowitz
Amidst the rubble of the fallen Temple, blocks of stone lie in stillness while the city weeps-
‏ִצ יּ וֹ ן She weeps, how she weeps in the night! … The roads of Zion are in mourning.( Eichah 1:2,4)
One block of stone cries out in anguish,“ How long must we lie here? Will no one return, to rebuild and make us whole again?
Another voice is heard:“ They will return.”
The first block of stone tries to turn towards the sound of this other voice but, alas, being made of stone she cannot move. She calls out,“ Who is speaking?” And hears the reply:
“ I was once a tall pillar, now I lie fallen, not far from you.“ They will return, and they will rebuild.”
“ How do you know this?”“ Because they must. Because they can.”“ Well that is reassuring.”
“ They will return and they will rebuild. Then, alas, we will fall once again, and after that, they will move on.”
“ Move on, what do you mean? Move on to where?”
