AMERICAN BOARD OF ANESTHESIOLOGY (ABA)
THE BASICS:
ABA Maintenance of Certification (MOC) is voluntary for non-time limited (certified before 2000)
certificate holders. Physicians who are non-time limited can participate in MOC by enrolling in
MOC and choosing the year they would like to complete the program.
Currently there are 3 separate tracks for MOC completion, depending on the year the physician’s
certificate expires.
Diplomates are considered to be enrolled in MOC if, by the end of the fifth year of their MOC cycle,
they have satisfactory professional standing, completed half of their CME credits and have
completed one Part 4 MOC activity. The ABA is reporting MOC status as “Meeting MOC
Requirements.” The ABA directory will note that diplomates who hold non-time limited certificates
are not required to participate in the ABA MOC Program.
