AMERICAN BOARD OF COLON AND RECTAL SURGERY (ABCRS)
THE BASICS:
ABCRS Maintenance of Certification (MOC) is voluntary for lifetime certificate holders (certified
before 1999). Physicians who are lifetime certificate holders and choose not to participate in MOC
will be listed as “not meeting MOC requirements” however, there will be a disclaimer. Lifetime
certificate holders are encouraged to voluntarily participate in MOC.
Every three years the ABCRS requires that the physician complete additional MOC documentation,
including a chief of staff evaluation form, documentation of hospital privileges and proof of
participation in an ongoing quality assessment program.
Prior to enrolling for the MOC exam, physicians are required to submit an operative experience
form listing all colon and rectal operative procedures performed in the previous 12 months on
both inpatient and outpatient procedures.
The annual MOC fee is reduced for lifetime certificate holders who voluntarily participate in MOC.
