[EVENT SPEAKERS DIARY]
Excelling in VUCA world where Emotional
Intelligence plays important role
and have a strategy in place to
protect against the damaging
impact. This is where emotional
intelligence comes into play. Its
application helps an organisation
to excel and survive in the VUCA
world, making it a must-have for
both leadership and employees.
Emotional Intelligence brings
about the ability to recognise,
express and control one’s emotions,
and to handle interpersonal
relationships judiciously and
empathetically with respective to
what one is faced with. It brilliantly
justifi es the growing demand
from organisations all around the
world for Emotionally Intelligent
employees.

T
he term VUCA, which stands
for Volatility, Uncertainty,
Complexity, and Ambiguity
was fi rst used at the United States
Army War College to explain
challenging war conditions.
Interestingly, the term VUCA is not
an approach limited to wars; it is
rather a true picture or defi nition of
what our environment has turned
into, especially the business world.
When we look around, you
see things happening at an
unimaginable pace. On various
occasions the change we see is
unprecedented, which leaves
little or no time for organisations
to turn things around to stay
relevant and avoid sinking into
extinction. The pressure this creates
if not properly handled, lead to
organisations getting swamped
which automatically affects the way
they operate.
For any organisation to excel
and stay relevant in this Volatile,
Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous
environment called VUCA, there
is a need for them to visualise,

anticipate, and factor in these
changes/trends in their strategies.
To successfully implement these
changes and trends, it is important
to pay a special attention to the
employees in such an organisation.
The success and failure of any
organisation are determined by
its actions. So it is important for
organisations to understand that
employees are also affected by the
ever-increasing rate of change in the
world around them, which disturbs
the inherent equilibrium of their
perception about life. This leaves
them with the task of fi ghting to
stay relevant in their personal and
work life.
The process of excelling and
staying relevant in the VUCA
environment is never an easy
process for an organisation.
Creating and implementing a
multitude of changes in too little a
time can lead to fatigue, insecurity,
and related drop in how employees
perform at work. To successfully
manage the situation, organisations
need to be at alert for these shocks

The benefi ts of developing high
levels of emotional intelligence
are numerous. For individuals
who want to develop or increase
their emotional intelligence and
organisations that want to help their
employees achieve it, the good news
is it can be achieved with some good
training.
Emotional intelligence
brings about an increase in team
performance, leadership ability,
personal well-being as well as
a decline in staff turnover and
occupational stress, improving
decision making on the whole. It is
basically an approach which helps
tackle external changes, and at the
same time brings about profound
internal transformations.
In the end, an organisation
comprising of Emotionally
Intelligent individuals that have
the knowledge of their rapidly
changing environment, and are
willing to adapt and lead, achieves
the impossible and sets new
benchmarks. They become the true
defi nition of an alert and future-
ready organisation capable of riding
the VUCA wave. P & M
