Message from the President
I am honored and privileged to address my colleagues in my role as PSNA president . Thank you for your support in electing me to this position for 2017-2019 .
PSNA recently celebrated 114 years as the professional association for registered nurses in Pennsylvania . I would like to recognize the association ’ s leadership , including immediate past president Dr . Christine Alichnie . Additionally , I extend gratitude for the guidance of CEO Betsy Snook , the efforts of our staff , and the dedication of our members .
Through our Young Nurse Professional initiative , PSNA is providing leadership to ANA constituent colleagues as they develop similar programs . This provides us an opportunity to sustain our collective efforts for years to come . In addition . our legislative engagement on safe staffing , delegation , and the establishment of a Pennsylvania CNO reflects our commitment to leading efforts to improve the health and well-being of the citizens of Pennsylvania . I invite you to read our Year in Review on page 3 for additional highlights .
Together , we are influentially and creatively meeting our shared mission to lead , advocate , educate , and connect with registered nurses across the Commonwealth . This also requires that we educate students to assume nursing roles . We are challenged to ensure that members of our ranks seek and achieve academic appointments . We must stop the trend of turning away qualified nursing student applicants due to lacking numbers of nursing faculty .
In doing so , we must foster partnerships between nursing education and clinical providers . Research demonstrates the impact of nursing education on patient outcomes . Hospital reimbursement policies require improved clinical outcomes linked to nursing care . Nurse educators , researchers , and administrators can address quality patient care while considering economic influences . Let us find ways to optimize our impact through collaborative efforts .
PSNA is uniquely positioned to impact the diversity of issues facing the profession . Doing so requires individual RN involvement . Such involvement begins with your engagement in efforts through PSNA and ANA membership . Our ability to address these issues requires resources . Those resources primarily come from your engagement through membership in PSNA . We prioritize our efforts given our available resources ; with increased resources we are able to expand our priorities in addressing our profession ’ s diverse challenges in improving patient care in Pennsylvania .
I encourage you to invite a colleague — or new-to-practice nurse — to explore their professional association . If you would like to get more involved , please reach out to our staff today . Again , thank you
