Message from the President
Greetings colleagues and welcome to the beginning of another calendar year ! As I write this , I am reflecting on our past year and wanted to share an excerpt from my 2017 PSNA Presidential Report :
In addition to new leadership at the helm of PSNA , we supported the transition of the Nursing Foundation of Pennsylvania ( NFP ) from the strong leadership of Betsy Walls to new NFP president Dr . Margarete Leib Zalon . NFP ’ s Board of Trustees continues fundraising to grow their scholarships and philanthropic efforts .
With strong leadership , innovative programs , and dedicated staff , PSNA has fiscally operated with a surplus budget . One of many contributions to this success is providing monthly education through the PSNA Continuing Education Center . In addition , PSNA has exceeded our 2017 membership growth goal . We now have more than 3,200 RN members ! Part of this is a direct result of the success of our Young Nurse Professional program and its regional leaders . In 2018 , we will work hard on retention as these new-topractice RNs transition out of the YNP program .
PSNA held a successful and productive Legislative Day in April 2017 . We continue to have a strong presence at the Capitol in Harrisburg . PSNA ’ s advocacy efforts continue to be invigorated through the PSNA political action committee ( PSNA-PAC ).
We demonstrated our national leadership as active participants in the American Nurses Association ’ s annual Membership Assembly in Washington , DC . Two major changes happened at this year ’ s meeting . First , participants made history by unanimously voting to end ANA ’ s recognition as a labor organization . Second , members voted to return the annual meeting to a House of Delegates . The first change allows flexibility in moving forward as a membership organization . The second change increases engagement of members with ANA during the annual meeting .
In October , PSNA provided another Star Leadership Institute program . Both CNE and CME credits were awarded in areas including inter-professional practice , financial management , legal and healthcare policy , team building and negotiation , crucial conversations and conflict resolution , and human resources . The 2018 program applications open in February 2018 . The Institute will return to the Historic Hotel Bethlehem in 2018 .
Finally , we returned to the Pocono ’ s for our second annual membership meeting and conference in October . This program was organized by PSNA and our Environmental Health Committee . We heard from presenters on how nurses shape the future of healthcare through work in human trafficking , healthy eating programs , and parental opioid abuse .
I look forward to another year of success and growth in providing service to PSNA members and the professional nursing community as PSNA president . Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support , engagement , and advocacy on behalf of our profession , our patients , and the health of all Pennsylvania residents .
