So, what happened to the Jane Does? Neither JD1
nor JD2 returned to work at Delnor Community
Hospital. One may never return to nursing. The
other has begun a new life in a different area of the
country. Tywon Salters died of a single gunshot
wound to the head; the shooting was found to be jus-
tified. The corrections officer was initially placed on
paid administrative leave. His current employment
status is not publicly known at the time of writing
this article. Illinois Nurses Association hosted a rally,
sponsered in part by SNMF. The result of the rally
was comprehensive legislation requiring violence
prevention strategies and imposed rules on escorting
inmates into healthcare facilities.
With this tragedy, SNMF was born. Violence is a
problem we must understand and end. It is not part
of the job. We deserve support and effective preven-
tion strategies from our employers. We deserve the
help we need to recover. We need interventions to pre-
vent burnout, PTSD, disability, career changes, and
other outcomes associated with violence in our jobs.
It may seem like a tremendous amount of change
that needs to happen. However, for it to begin, there
need be one call to action:
