A CONCRETE EEE Article IMPACT By Gillian Watson, Communications Assistant LOCAL HERITAGE SITE ENGAGES STUDENTS THROUGH WORK OF TEACHERS & BAHAMAS REEF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION FOUNDATION Occasionally a teacher has an opportunity to see her work come alive in a concrete way, to find tangible proof that what she has been doing all along is important and has weight. Lyford Cay International School (LCIS) science and physical education teacher, Denise Mizell, has had this experience working with what will surely become one of The Bahamas’ iconic symbols: The Sir Nicholas Nuttall Coral Reef Sculpture Garden. Located off the coast of southwestern New Providence near The Clifton Heritage Park, the garden is where art, education, and conservation collide in a powerful and permanent manner. The Sir Nicholas Nuttall Coral Reef Sculpture Garden hides beneath the surface of the water, just waiting to be discovered. It waits to reveal its secrets and to teach us everything we want to learn about the ocean. The underwater garden project is driven by the Bahamas Reef Environmental Education Foundation (BREEF). Its purpose is twofold: to pay homage to the NGO’s founder, Sir Nicholas Nuttall, and to create an environment that will encourage people to engage 3
