The expanding role of encoder technology
The HEIDENHAIN family of brands is demonstrating how encoder technology is evolving far beyond traditional position feedback. From advanced linear measurement systems and structural monitoring to integrated predictive maintenance, these innovations show how sensing solutions are becoming increasingly intelligent, adaptable and valuable across modern industry.
Advancing Precision with the MS 14 and MS 15
The RSF Electronik MS 14 and MS 15 exposed linear encoders address the growing demand for precision, flexibility and reliability.
The modular MS 15 offers a choice of graduation carriers and scanning heads, enabling machine builders to tailor encoder performance to specific applications. With measuring lengths of up to 20,000 mm and resolutions from 10 ยต m down to 50 nm, it delivers exceptional accuracy while incorporating integrated optical homing and limit functions.
The MS 14 focuses on operational transparency and reliability. Its single-field scanning technology features online signal stabilisation and a three-colour LED signal quality indicator, allowing continuous monitoring of encoder performance across measuring lengths of up to

10,000 mm. Combining measuring steps down to 50 nm with travel speeds of up to 10 m / s, it provides a balance of precision, speed and ease of maintenance.
S-plus Encoders Enable Smarter Machines
The ECI 1323 S-plus and EQI 1335 S-plus encoders highlight the increasing role of integrated machine intelligence. Equipped with a builtin 3D accelerometer, they perform vibration analysis directly within the encoder, supporting frequency analysis, order analysis and RMS evaluation.
By synchronising vibration and position data, the encoders can identify developing faults in rotating machinery before they impact production. This reduces the need for additional monitoring hardware while supporting predictive maintenance strategies.
As Industry 4.0 continues to advance, technologies such as the S-plus platform demonstrate how modern encoders are becoming multifunctional sensors. By combining accurate position feedback, diagnostics and vibration monitoring, they help manufacturers improve uptime, reduce maintenance costs and create more connected, efficient and resilient production systems.
ESR Strain Sensors Transform Structural Monitoring
Large structures such as bridges, wind turbines and cranes require continuous monitoring to ensure safe and efficient operation. Developed jointly by HEIDENHAIN and LEINE & LINDE, the ESR strain sensor series applies proven rotary encoder technology to strain measurement.
Positioned between two measuring points, the sensors detect minute length changes caused by tensile and compressive forces. This approach delivers a resolution equivalent to 5 nm per encoder increment and more than 18 bits of measurement capability, providing substantially more data than many conventional strain gauge systems.
Digital transmission via the EnDat 2.2 interface ensures highly accurate, low-noise measurement signals while also providing temperature, diagnostic and status information. Available with adhesive, screwfastened or magnetic mounting options, ESR sensors can be used for permanent, recurring or temporary monitoring applications, making them a versatile solution for structural health assessment.
