Why gearboxes and drives should be specified together

A geared motor is rarely just a mechanical component. In many industrial applications, it sits at the point where electrical efficiency, torque delivery, speed control and mechanical integration meet. Here, Marek Lukaszczyk, UK & Middle East marketing manager at WEG, explains why specification should consider the motor, gearbox and drive together rather than treating each component separately.
The IEA 4E Electric Motor Systems Platform reports that motor systems account for 53 per cent of global electricity consumption, while existing and emerging technologies could reduce motor-system energy demand by 20 to 30 per cent across industry, infrastructure and buildings. That makes the way motors, gearboxes and drives are specified a significant efficiency opportunity.
Applications such as conveyors, mixers, pumps and materials handling systems all place different demands on the motion system. A fixed-speed conveyor may need robust torque delivery and reliable operation over long running hours. A process with variable demand may benefit from a variable speed drive( VSD), such as WEG’ s CFW series, allowing motor speed to be matched more closely to the application. In both cases, the gearbox affects how efficiently useful work is delivered from the energy supplied.
WEGs WG20 geared motors and WG50 gearboxes illustrate this system-level approach. WG20 supports compact, efficient geared motor applications, while WG50 is designed for heavier duties where torque delivery, speed reduction and mechanical durability are central to performance.
As energy efficiency expectations rise, the real value comes from specifying the right combination of motor, gearbox and drive for the way the equipment actually operates.
