Smarter waste processing for food manufacturers

PUMPS TURNING WASTE INTO VALUE

Smarter waste processing for food manufacturers
In food manufacturing, efficiency is measured not only by product output but also by how effectively unavoidable waste is managed. Fruit and vegetable peels, seeds and production residues are generated every day, and inefficient handling can lead to operational disruptions, hygiene challenges and increased labour requirements.
FlowShred combines a twin-shaft grinder with a progressive cavity pump.
A medium-sized vegetable processor in Austria experienced these challenges firsthand. Processing several tonnes of produce daily, the facility generated around 750 kg of organic waste each day. Waste containers occupied valuable production space, while manual handling and cleaning demands slowed operations.
“ Previously, our waste handling processes were a constant source of disruption to daily operations,” recalls a plant manager.“ Space requirements, hygiene demands and manual handling continuously slowed us down.”
Today, many food manufacturers are integrating waste handling directly into production processes. Rather than treating organic waste solely
When waste handling operates reliably, companies are free to focus on their core business.
as a disposal issue, modern systems shred and homogenise waste into a pumpable suspension that can be conveyed automatically to storage or further processing. According to Bernd-Guntram Schulz, Product and Market Manager at SEEPEX, waste streams often have a greater impact on plant performance than companies realise.“ When these streams are stabilised and controlled, the benefits can be seen across the entire operation,” he explains.
By automating waste collection and transport, manufacturers can reduce blockages, manual intervention and workflow interruptions. The result is greater process reliability, improved use of production space and reduced labour requirements. Additional benefits include lower disposal and cleaning costs, fewer waste transport movements and reduced carbon emissions.
Shredded organic material can also support resource recovery efforts, including biogas production, helping companies strengthen their sustainability objectives. For food manufacturers, where uptime and efficiency are critical, reliable waste handling is becoming an increasingly important contributor to overall plant performance.“ Our goal is to transform a disruptionprone process into a stable part of production,” says Schulz.“ When waste handling operates reliably, companies are free to focus on their core business.”

As the Austrian processor found, effective waste management is not just about disposal. It is about creating a more efficient, resilient and sustainable operation.
