WEG introduces W23 Sync + ULTRA IE6 efficiency motor
In response to the evolving energy efficiency landscape and the increasing demand for environmental responsibility , global motor manufacturer WEG has launched its new W23 Sync + ULTRA motor . Having released the W23 Sync + general line in November 2023 , the new ULTRA variety boasts IE6 efficiency — going one step further than its predecessor that is available in efficiency ratings up to IE5 .
The W23 Sync + ULTRA combines permanent magnet ( PM ), ferrite or neodymium magnets , and synchronous reluctance ( SynRM ) motor technologies to deliver unparalleled efficiency across all speeds . The key to the W23 Sync + ULTRA motor ’ s exceptional efficiency lies in this PMSynRM technology , which effectively reduces electrical losses through the strategic use of magnets .
This results in a motor that maintains high efficiency levels even under varying speed and load conditions . Compared to conventional induction motors , the W23 Sync + ULTRA experiences minimal efficiency loss , demonstrating a decrease of less than two per cent when load and speed are reduced by 25 per cent .
Designed to surpass current European Ecodesign regulations , the new flagship IE6 model reinforces the transformative benefits of the new PMSynRM technology , emphasising its ability to exceed ultra-premium efficiency levels while reducing environmental impact .
The motor will be available in a range of frame sizes from IEC 80 to

450 ( NEMA 140 up to 7000 ). Able to operate over a wide speed range at constant torque , without the use of forced ventilation , it is available in speed ranges from 750 up to 6000 revolutions per minute ( rpm ). The motor ’ s output rating ranges from 0.75 to 1250 kW , while it is compatible with a 220 / 380 volt ( V ), 230 / 400 V , 240 / 415 V or 400 / 690 V power supply .
“ The W23 Sync + ULTRA IE6 efficiency motor represents a significant milestone in motor technology ,” explained Marek Lukaszczyk , European and Middle East marketing manager at WEG . “ An IE6 motor has another 20 per cent reduction of losses compared to an IE5 motor . The W23 Sync + ULTRA ’ s hybrid design not only ensures higher efficiency across all speeds , but also contributes to reduced CO2 emissions , prolonged operational lifespan and decreased maintenance requirements , aligning perfectly with the growing global commitment to sustainability .
“ As traditional induction motor technology nears its maximum efficiency capabilities , the necessity for alternative solutions became increasingly evident to WEG . Attaining higher efficiency standards requires electric motors to accommodate exceedingly high levels of inrush current , thereby requiring the implementation of new starter mechanisms and protective systems when replacing older motors .”
The environmental impact of the W23 Sync + ULTRA extends beyond energy savings , contributing to broader reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and aligning with sustainable practices . The motor ’ s energy efficiency directly translates to reduced demand for natural resources and minimised environmental impacts , making it an ideal choice for industries striving for efficiency , reliability and sustainability .
The W23 Sync + ULTRA motor line is available globally , supported by WEG ’ s comprehensive technical support and services . Its compact design and compatibility with existing installations make it an ideal choice for a wide range of applications , from compressors and pumps to fans and conveyors .
