LOCALISED MANUFACTURING In stark contrast to the now ever-present Gigafactories , Microfactories allow goods to be manufactured closer to their point of use .
Over the course of the last decade we ’ ve seen a vast shift towards larger and more centralised entities , be that in the emergence of Gigafactories fuelled by globalisation , or the creation of huge data-centres owned by a small number of companies handling a majority of web traffic . After the events of the global pandemic , this narrative has started to shift , paving the way for a less centralised , and therefore more agile and resilient way of working .
Outside of industry , this shift can be seen in the transition from centralised towards point-of-use energy solutions ,
Automated analytics tools will increasingly grow as manufacturing continues to move towards proactive data analysis .
such as domestic solar and heat pump technologies . This shift allows for these technologies to scale more easily than if fed from a central source . This methodology is starting to find its place in industry with more manufacturers starting to move away from a dependence on a small number of very large facilities , in favour of a higher number of smaller facilities located more closely to where the goods will ultimately be used .
Whilst the verdict is still out on the relative infrastructure costs of each methodology , there are clear advantages to the point-ofuse ethos in its ability to scale more quickly and easily , as well as also eliminating the cost and waste associated with changing or scaling anything large and centralised .
